ЕГЭ по английскому языку 2026 года, кажется, решил проверить выпускников не только на знание английского, но и на знание собственной страны.
В разных вариантах экзамена выпускникам встретились вопросы о российских государственных праздниках:
What does Victory Day / Unity Day / Defender of the Fatherland Day / Spring and Labour Day / City Day commemorate?
Для многих это стало неожиданностью. Мы привыкли готовиться к вопросам про хобби, спорт, путешествия, экологические проблемы, образование или планы на будущее. Казалось бы, Бен, Майк и Джоан — ну спросите уже, чем я занимаюсь в свободное время. Зачем вам история Бородинской битвы?
Одно дело — знать, что это за праздник. И совсем другое — суметь на английском объяснить, какому историческому событию он посвящён, почему его отмечают и какие традиции с ним связаны.
Например, большинство школьников без труда скажут, что Unity Day— это День Народного Единства и отмечается он 4 мая, во время каникул. Но что ответить на вопрос What is the history behind the holiday?? Как объяснить иностранному собеседнику, почему этот день имеет такое значение для России? Нужно вспомнить события 1612 года, как сказать "смута" на английском, интервенция, народное ополчение освобождение Москвы.

| Spring and Labour Day — 1 May | Spring and Labour Day has its roots in the international labour movement. In the late 19th century, workers in different countries began demanding better working conditions and shorter working hours. In Russia, 1 May became an important workers' holiday during the Soviet period. Today, it is associated with spring, work and labour rights. |
| International Women's Day — 8 March | International Women's Day has its roots in the women's rights movement of the early 20th century. Women in different countries organised demonstrations and campaigns demanding better working conditions and equal rights. The United Nations officially recognised 8 March as International Women's Day in 1977. In Russia, it has become a popular holiday celebrating women. |
| Russia Day — 12 June | Russia Day is connected with the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic on 12 June 1990. This document declared the sovereignty of the Russian republic. The holiday has been officially called Russia Day since 2002 and celebrates Russian statehood and national unity. |
| Unity Day - 4 November | At that time, Russia was going through a difficult period known as the Time of Troubles. A people's volunteer army, led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, fought against the Polish troops and helped to liberate Moscow. |
